Have an interior design question? We’re here to help. Here are some of the most frequent questions and concerns that come up in interior design.
Does decor and design affect the value of my home?
Structurally, your interior can have a huge positive effect on the value of your home. Having well-designed rooms in your home can also make it much easier to sell, as prospective buyers will be able to envision themselves in an attractive and comfortable space. Investing in interior design projects will be very worthwhile if you eventually decide to sell your home.
How do I know it’s time to upgrade my furniture?
It can be difficult to determine when it’s time to buy new furniture pieces. If wear and tear on your furniture is making it difficult for you to use it for it’s intended purposes, then it is definitely time to go shopping. However, if you are considering moving soon, want to make drastic design changes to your home, or your needs have changed (i.e.,. new kids, more roommates), then it also may be beneficial to look for new furniture.
Should I order home decor products online or buy in person?
This depends on your circumstances. If you live in an area with plenty of selection for interior design products, then going to a showroom can give you the opportunity to ensure that you love a product before purchasing. However, you may have access to a much larger selection of products online. If you are looking for more variety to choose from, then shopping online may be the best way to find exactly what you want.
I’m on a tight budget. What aspects of my home should I focus on?
It’s best to focus your money on investments that you know will serve you well in the long haul. If you desperately need a new sink or air conditioning system, for example, your money will be better spent on that one project than several other, small projects that won’t last as long or make as big of a difference in your everyday life.
How do I know if I need to hire an interior designer?
You may be able to DIY certain aspects of your home, but if you are planning on making a major change, an interior designer is your best option for doing that in a way that is both timely and financially efficient. Although an interior designer may seem like an unnecessary expense at first, it may pay off in the end, as they will be able to work within your chosen budget to get you the most for your money.
How are interior designers and interior decorators differ?
Interior designers work on a complex range of projects concerning not only furniture and decor but also lighting, structural design, building safety, and much more. They work on both commercial and private projects. Becoming an interior designer requires a certification and licensing as well as extensive training.
An interior decorator is a much more vague term, but usually refers to someone who deals with furniture, surfaces, and walls. Interior decorators do not require the same certifications that interior designers do.
Who should I consult for my interior design project?
If you only need to re-do carpeting, tiling, or other surfaces or add furniture and other decor elements, then an interior decorator will be able to help you. If your project is more complex and involves overhauling most aspects of your space, then you should consult an interior designer. If you need to tear down walls or change any major structural aspects of the building, then you should ask an architect as well as an interior designer.
